Portage County • July 28, 2025
Good morning, Portage County. The lights went out for more than 22,000 Cleveland-area residents yesterday as a massive power outage swept through western Cuyahoga County. While FirstEnergy crews work to restore electricity by late afternoon, affected residents from Cleveland to Lakewood find themselves unexpectedly disconnected in the digital age—a stark reminder of our dependence on the power grid that often goes unnoticed until it vanishes.
Meanwhile, two community events highlight the region's rich character: Mayfield Village invites families to honor first responders on July 31 with station tours and a poignant 9/11 memorial featuring Twin Towers steel, while the recently concluded Antique Power Exhibition celebrated its 54th year with vintage machinery that turned back time. From 1919 steam engines to tractor teeter-tottering competitions, the three-day event offered a fascinating glimpse into our agricultural heritage.

🚒 Mayfield Village invites public to honor first responders on July 31. The community event, beginning at 10 a.m., will feature tours of the village Fire Station and police vehicles alongside opportunities to meet local emergency personnel. Visitors can enjoy grilled hot dogs while learning about safety from the professionals themselves. The memorial includes a poignant display of small American flags placed inside a steel beam recovered from the Twin Towers. Families are encouraged to participate in this educational and commemorative gathering.
🚜 Antique Power Exhibition celebrates 54 years of nostalgic machinery. The three-day event at Lake Metroparks Farmpark featured steam-powered engines, tractor pulls, and vintage equipment demonstrations. Visitors enjoyed watching a 1919 engine running a grain thresher, along with tractor teeter-tottering competitions. The grounds were filled with hand-painted pumps and various gas engines showcasing agricultural history. Event manager Andy McGovern oversaw the festivities that concluded on July 27, 2025.
