Good morning, Portage County. The serene trails of Cuyahoga Valley National Park find themselves at the center of attention this week, with more than 70 billboards across Ohio highlighting concerns about potential budget reductions. These eye-catching displays, featuring messages like "Now With Reduced Staff," aim to preserve these natural treasures that offer equal experiences to visitors regardless of economic status.

Meanwhile, the legacy of compassionate care continues to inspire as we remember Dr. Stanley Brown, the beloved Beachwood dentist who served as the Cleveland Cavaliers' team dentist for two decades. His patient-centered approach extended beyond traditional care—from birthday gift certificates to accepting barter from those unable to pay. In other community news, Canton native Rosemarie M. Esber returns home on May 18 to offer perspective on Middle Eastern history with her free lecture at the Akron-Summit Public Library.

🏞️ Billboards warn of looming cuts to national parks. More than 70 billboards across Ohio are raising alarm about potential budget reductions at Cuyahoga Valley National Park. The campaign, funded by nonprofit More Perfect Union, highlights Trump's proposed $1 billion cut to the National Park Service that could lead to a 75% systemwide reduction. The billboards feature messages like "Now With Reduced Staff" and "Made Possible By $DOGE," referring to Trump's Department of Government Efficiency led by Elon Musk. Similar billboards have appeared near other national parks, aiming to preserve these public spaces that offer equal experiences to rich and poor alike.

🦷 Dr. Stanley Brown's gentle touch made dental visits a joy. The beloved Beachwood dentist, who died at 95, served as the Cleveland Cavaliers' team dentist for about 20 years starting in 1970. Known for his patient-centered approach, Brown would give birthday children Baskin-Robbins gift certificates and never turned away those who couldn't pay, sometimes accepting barter instead. Beyond dentistry, he was a former president of Suburban Temple-Kol Ami, an avid sports fan, and lived by the mantra "every day you put your feet on the floor is a good day." His 67-year marriage to Barbara and dedication to his four children reflected the same compassionate spirit that defined his professional life.
