🎭 Cultural champions

Portage County • March 24, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. Decades before today's heated debates about classroom censorship, Akron's Sarah Caldwell was already standing firm on the educational frontlines. As the trailblazing president of the National Education Association during the McCarthy era, she boldly championed teachers' freedom against ideological control—a reminder that our region has long produced leaders who shaped national conversations about what and how students should learn.

The spirit of unity continues to flourish locally through diverse expressions. The Akron Area Interfaith Council is weaving community connections through their Tapestry of Unity project, inviting residents to share prayers and hopes on fabric strips during upcoming April and May gatherings. Meanwhile, classical music enthusiasts have reason to celebrate as the Cleveland Orchestra unveils its star-studded 2025-26 season featuring international talents like pianist Daniil Trifonov and a special celebration of Beethoven's only opera, "Fidelio."

🍎 Sarah Caldwell championed teacher freedom against ideological control of schools. The Akron educator, who organized the city's first teachers union, rose to become president of the 500,000-member National Education Association in 1952. During the McCarthy era, she boldly defended educators' rights to teach without censorship, arguing that "freedom of expression is the bulwark of democracy." Throughout her 40-year teaching career, Caldwell advocated for local control of education while warning against political interference that might restrict what students could learn. Her educational philosophy centered on preparing students to be good citizens in an increasingly interconnected world.
