Portage County • March 19, 2025
Good morning, Portage County. Breaking the glass ceiling never sounded so inspiring. Tiera Moore, a Kent State alumna who balances executive duties at Summit County with leading Kent's School Board, has been honored with the prestigious G.E.A.R. award for her work advancing gender equity. Her recognition reminds us that leadership often blooms right in our backyard, with the celebration set for Tuesday at Kent State's Hotel and Conference Center.
Elsewhere in our region, dramatic shifts are unfolding in both real estate and culinary competitions. A high-end housing development in Brecksville with million-dollar price tags has unexpectedly stalled after receiving preliminary approval, while Akron's pizza passion has reached fever pitch with nearly 3,000 voters weighing in on the city's ultimate pizza championship. Luigi's may have dominated the first round, but with voting continuing through Sunday, the cheesy battle is far from over.

π Young leader turns gears toward gender equity in Summit County. Tiera Moore, executive assistant to Summit County's Chief of Staff, has received Kent State University's prestigious G.E.A.R. award for advancing gender equity. The KSU alumna balances her county role while serving as President of Kent City School District's Board of Education. County Executive Ilene Shapiro praised Moore's passion and dedication, noting her understanding of "empowerment as a driving force of effective leadership." The award ceremony celebrating Moore's contributions will be held Tuesday at the Kent State Hotel and Conference Center.
π Million-dollar homes project hits unexpected roadblock in Brecksville. The proposed 12-lot subdivision on 46 acres off Snowville Road has been halted by property owner Kirk Doskocil, who informed developer Petros Development Group about the cancellation two weeks ago. Originally planned with homes priced between $1.5-$3 million, the project had received preliminary approval in December 2023 despite neighborhood concerns about property values, traffic, and flooding. The development would have preserved two-thirds of the site in its natural state, but city officials remain uncertain whether the postponement is temporary or permanent.
π Akron's pizza wars heat up as top 8 shops battle for glory. Nearly 3,000 passionate pizza lovers voted in the March Madness-style competition to determine Akron's best pizza spot. Luigi's dominated the first round with over 2,000 votes, while Gino's narrowly defeated Regina's in the tightest matchup. The remaining contenders include Merriman Valley Pizza, Fiesta Pizza and Chicken, Twisted Tomato, DeCheco's, Rasicci's, and Totally Baked Pizza. Voting for the second round runs through Sunday, with the ultimate champion to be crowned on April 8.
