🧑‍🚒 Family fire heroes

Portage County • February 6, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. In an era where volunteer firefighting units are becoming as rare as drive-in theaters, Gates Mills is keeping the flame alive through an extraordinary family tradition. The Nemastil clan - with father Paul and son Nick serving side by side - represents the beating heart of Ohio's last all-volunteer fire department in Cuyahoga County, proving that some hometown traditions are worth fighting to preserve.

Meanwhile, Solon's commercial landscape is heating up faster than a Mitchell's Ice Cream sundae, with Kruse Commons selling in just 48 hours at full price. And speaking of community spirit, St. Joseph Church in Mantua is opening its doors this Saturday for a clothing and diaper giveaway, reminding us that the warmest gestures often come without price tags.

🚒 Three generations of firefighters keep Gates Mills' volunteer spirit alive. The Nemastil family exemplifies the success of the village's cadet program, with father Paul and son Nick serving as the department's only active father-son duo. The program, which accepts teens as young as 14, has trained between 40-50 cadets throughout its history, many becoming full-time firefighters. As the last volunteer department in Cuyahoga County, Gates Mills faces the challenge of declining volunteer numbers statewide. The department plans to revitalize and expand its cadet program regionally to combat the six percent decrease in volunteer firefighters since 2019.

🏪 Ohio shopping plaza sells in just two days at full price. Kruse Commons, a vibrant Solon retail center featuring Mitchell's Ice Cream and Panera Bread, was purchased by Cincinnati-based Viking Partners for $7.1 million. The plaza's prime location and excellent maintenance history made it an attractive investment opportunity, according to local economic development officials. Viking Partners, which has acquired over $1.4 billion in assets since 2008, takes control of the mostly-occupied plaza with just two current vacancies. The sale reflects growing investor interest in Solon's expanding commercial district.
