πŸ’‰ Lifesavers in training

Portage County • February 5, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. In a stark reminder that everyday heroes don't always wear capes, Townhall II is launching a mission to turn ordinary citizens into potential lifesavers. Their new 15-minute Narcan training sessions aim to make this vital overdose reversal medication as commonplace as band-aids and fire extinguishers – because sometimes the most powerful tools for change fit in the palm of your hand.

As our community embraces this life-saving initiative, positive changes are brewing elsewhere too. Crestwood School District is exploring an innovative partnership with SAIL's special education program, while health officials keep a watchful eye on the spread of bird flu through Ohio's farms. From classrooms to farmyards, these developments remind us that protecting our neighbors takes many forms.

πŸ’‰ Free Narcan training could save lives in Kent, Ohio. Townhall II Integrated Health Network is launching monthly 15-minute drop-in sessions to teach people how to administer the life-saving overdose reversal drug. The initiative comes as CDC data shows opioids were involved in 80,000 overdose deaths in 2021, with bystanders present in more than one-third of cases. CEO Tamera Hunter aims to make Narcan as common as first aid kits and fire extinguishers, while also providing free harm reduction supplies through a discreet lobby vending machine.

🏫 Crestwood School District explores innovative partnership with special education program SAIL. The program is seeking to rent four classrooms in Crestwood's Central Office to serve K-12 students with disabilities from around Portage County. Under the potential arrangement, SAIL would pay $5,000 per classroom to provide specialized instruction and inclusion opportunities with licensed specialists. The district welcomed new leadership as Kristen Cavanaugh stepped into the role of President and Eric Hummel as Vice President. Superintendent Aireane Curtis expressed optimism about the partnership's potential benefits for both organizations.

πŸ¦… Bird flu claims first US death as virus spreads through farms. The fatality in Louisiana occurred in someone who had contact with wild birds, marking a concerning shift from the typically mild cases seen in farm workers. While most U.S. cases remain mild, Ohio leads the nation in commercial poultry infections, affecting both chickens and turkeys. Experts advise keeping pets inside near dairy farms and avoiding contact with sick wild birds. Though public health officials aren't overly concerned for the general population, they're watching closely for the virus's potential spread to pig populations, which could enable dangerous viral mutations.
