Portage County • January 23, 2025
Good morning, Portage County. If you thought the winter of '36 was one for the history books, Mother Nature is staging quite the encore. Today's arctic blast threatens to match that 88-year-old record with a bone-chilling minus 13 degrees, though we're still a dozen degrees shy of the legendary minus 25 that had Northeast Ohio bundling up in '94.
Thankfully, our community rises to meet every challenge. As thermometers plummet, the doors of Serenity House and Shepherd's House swing wide open 24/7, offering warmth and shelter to those seeking refuge. Meanwhile, in Beachwood, the Mandel JCC is generating its own kind of warmth with the appointment of Jesse Rosen as their new leader, bringing a fresh spark of innovation from the considerably balmier shores of Palm Beach.

🥶 Akron-Canton braces for record-breaking cold snap at minus 13 degrees. The frigid temperatures forecasted for today could match or surpass a daily record that has stood since 1936. While impressive, this potential record still falls short of the area's all-time low of minus 25, recorded in 1994. The region remains under an extreme cold warning, with wind chills plummeting to minus 24. Relief is in sight though, as temperatures are expected to gradually climb back to the 30s by the weekend.
❄️ Bitter cold prompts two Ravenna warming centers to open doors 24/7. The Serenity House and Shepherd's House locations are providing round-the-clock shelter to Portage County residents seeking refuge from dangerous temperatures. The Serenity House, operating from a former church building, can accommodate eight people with basic amenities and food provided by the Center of Hope. The Shepherd's House is currently housing a dozen people in its warming center alongside regular residents, offering additional services like showers and laundry facilities. Both centers are actively seeking volunteers and donations to support their emergency operations through Thursday morning.
🏢 Cleveland Jewish Community Center names dynamic leader for next chapter. Jesse Rosen has been appointed as the new president and CEO of the Mandel JCC in Beachwood, bringing his proven track record from Palm Beach leadership. Under his previous tenure in Palm Beach, Rosen successfully drove program growth and increased philanthropic support while maintaining fiscal responsibility. His appointment comes after the October resignation of Rabbi Carnie Rose, with the organization expressing confidence in Rosen's ability to foster innovation and strengthen community engagement. Rosen will begin his new role on March 10, inheriting what board leaders describe as an organization with both a proud legacy and exciting future.
