🌬️ Winter's icy embrace

Portage County • January 21, 2025

Good morning, Portage County. Mother Nature is flexing her winter muscles across Northeast Ohio in a way we haven't seen since Christmas 2022, sending temperatures plummeting to a teeth-chattering minus 24 degrees with wind chill. As hundreds of schools close their doors and warming centers swing theirs wide open, it's a powerful reminder that sometimes the best community service is simply checking on our neighbors - and keeping Fluffy indoors where she belongs.

While Arctic winds howl outside, there's a warm ray of hope breaking through Ohio's healthcare horizon. NEOMED's new Bitonte College of Dentistry is preparing to welcome its first class this summer, bringing much-needed smiles to our region's dental desert. With 57% of Ohio's dentists eyeing retirement, these future oral health heroes couldn't be arriving at a better time.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

❄️ Arctic blast sends Akron into deep freeze, closing hundreds of schools. Dangerous wind chills as low as minus 24 degrees are sweeping across northern Ohio through Wednesday morning, prompting widespread closures of schools and universities. The National Weather Service warns this could be the region's coldest stretch since Christmas 2022, with temperatures plunging to 12 degrees below zero. Multiple warming centers have opened across Summit County communities, including Akron's Summit Lake Community Center and Emergency Overnight Shelter. Officials warn that frostbite can occur within 30 minutes of exposure and urge residents to check on elderly neighbors and keep pets indoors.
