Pike County • September 25, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. The thin blue line was stretched especially taut on September 22, as Chillicothe police responded to a staggering 24+ incidents in a single day. From a heart-stopping case of a toddler found wandering in traffic to multiple assaults and trespassing complaints, our officers certainly earned their badges. Meanwhile, in a powerful testament to how art can transform communities, local artist Landon has stepped forward with a creative solution to combat hateful graffiti on the Larry Cox Memorial Trail, proposing a mural that might break the cycle of vandalism through beauty.
Pike County also bids farewell to one of its own this week, as Navy veteran and dedicated accountant Robert Barbee passed peacefully at 83. The Waverly resident, who devoted more than three decades to Ohio Valley Electric Corporation, leaves behind a legacy of family and service that will be celebrated Thursday at Botkin Hornback Funeral Home, with visitation opportunities Wednesday evening for community members wishing to pay respects.

π Chillicothe police face chaotic day of wandering toddlers and crime. Officers responded to over 24 incidents on September 22, including a particularly alarming case of a two-year-old found wandering in the roadway on Dayton Street, resulting in child endangerment charges. The busy Monday also included reports of vandalism on South Paint Street, multiple assaults, and trespassing complaints at local businesses. Police handled several traffic violations throughout the day, including a collision caused by failure to yield during a left turn. Officers also took a suspect with an active warrant into custody and responded to a protection order violation that resulted in a warrant request.
π¨ Local artist battles hate with beauty on Chillicothe trail. Landon has offered to paint a free mural over offensive graffiti in a tunnel on the Larry Cox Memorial/Paint Creek Recreational Trail. The downtown organizer described the current graffiti as a "significant piece of ugliness" containing hateful words and sexual images that create feelings of dread among trail users. His solution follows advice from larger cities that murals can break the cycle of repeated vandalism, as graffiti artists typically respect other artists' work. Though the location may be outside city limits, Mayor Luke Feeney has agreed to discuss the community-focused art project with Landon.
