Pike County • August 21, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. Ohio's native plant communities have gained some unexpected allies in the battle against overpopulation—bow-wielding conservationists. The ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves is organizing special deer hunts across 22 counties for the 2025-2026 season, using a lottery system to award permits to hunters willing to help restore ecological balance in areas where deer have been dining a bit too enthusiastically on vulnerable vegetation.
Meanwhile, a bittersweet intersection of celebration and tragedy marks our community this week. As Ohio University-Chillicothe prepares to honor three decades of nursing excellence with an October 4th alumni gathering, we're reminded of healthcare's vital importance following Monday's tragic accident near U.S. Route 23 and DeBord Road. The collision claimed the life of 70-year-old Carol Cunningham—a somber reminder to approach every intersection with vigilance as we travel throughout our county.

🦌 Ohio offers special deer hunts to protect native plants. The ODNR Division of Natural Areas and Preserves is holding archery, gun, and muzzleloader hunts in 22 counties during the 2025-2026 season. Permits will be awarded through a lottery system requiring hunters to attend mandatory meetings and purchase $5 tickets. The hunts target areas where high deer populations threaten native plant communities, with some locations requiring hunters to harvest an antlerless deer before taking an antlered one. Locations include state nature preserves and scenic river lands across Ohio, with specific regulations to be addressed at orientation meetings.
