Pike County • August 13, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. When financial storms hit a community, it's often the local institutions that provide the first shelter. Homeland Credit Union is demonstrating this with their free Coffee Chats for laid-off Chillicothe Paper Mill workers, creating spaces where financial guidance meets emotional support during an undeniably difficult transition. These sessions represent more than budget advice—they're lifelines of hope when neighbors need it most.
Around our region, resilience takes many forms. At Acton Family Farms, watermarks and debris tell the story of recent flooding that threatened livestock and damaged crops, yet the family perseveres. Meanwhile, hammers are swinging in West Portsmouth, where Habitat for Humanity broke ground on their first local build—a three-bedroom home for a single mother that represents not just shelter, but a community's commitment to lifting up its own.

🌊 Ohio farm battles devastating flood damage at Acton Family Farms. Photos from August 8, 2025 show the aftermath of severe flooding that left visible watermarks and debris throughout the Frankfort property. Brice Acton can be seen surveying damaged cornfields where patches and brown lines mark where floodwaters swept through. The flooding rose high enough to threaten livestock, forcing the family to relocate pigs from their shelter for safety. Despite the challenges, the farm continues to maintain its sheep and pig operations amid the recovery efforts.
🏠 Habitat for Humanity breaks ground on first West Portsmouth build. The Tri-State chapter is constructing a three-bedroom home for a single mother, marking their first Scioto County project since merging with the local organization. Unlike traditional lenders, Habitat offers homeownership opportunities for those earning 30-60% of area income and doesn't consider medical debt or credit scores in applications. The program requires "sweat equity" hours from participants who help with construction or volunteer at their recently opened New Boston Re-Store. While construction has begun, the organization is seeking an additional $25,000 to complete the project.
