Pike County • July 3, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. From giraffes to dragonflies, the animal kingdom is making quite a splash locally this summer. Young 4-H Cloverbuds recently enjoyed an unforgettable day at Rose Valley Park, where they fed and petted everything from lemurs to zebras—combining educational exploration with the pure joy that comes from connecting with animals. Meanwhile, citizen scientists have a unique opportunity to contribute to environmental research as Mound City Group seeks volunteers for their Dragonfly Mercury Project on July 25th.
In a blast from the past, we're revisiting April 1975 when the Piketon-Seal Township Fire Department received their powerful 750-gallon pumper from Sutphen Fire Equipment Company. Department members spent that weekend testing their new firefighting asset—a moment captured in the archives that reminds us how community safety investments have long been a priority. Some things never change, even after nearly five decades.

🦒 Young 4-H Cloverbuds experience animal magic at Rose Valley Park. Premier Showmen 4-H Club members enjoyed an educational adventure feeding and petting various animals including mini cows, lemurs, zebras, and giraffes. The June 8 outing combined learning with hands-on animal interactions that brought smiles and laughter to all participants. After exploring the animal exhibits, the children enjoyed bounce houses and cooled off at the park's splash pad. This excursion represents one of many enriching experiences the club offers to foster curiosity and learning among its youngest members.
🐉 Dragonfly hunters needed for crucial mercury tracking project. Mound City Group seeks volunteers to collect dragonfly nymphs on July 25th for the Dragonfly Mercury Project, which monitors mercury levels across the U.S. Participants must be at least 13 years old and prepared for rough terrain with swift currents. The project provides valuable data for researchers in public health and environmental policy while revealing dragonfly diversity in waterways. Equipment will be provided, but volunteers should bring water, sunscreen, and appropriate footwear for the half-mile walk to the sampling site.
