🎣 Gone fishing

Pike County • May 14, 2025

Good morning, Pike County. Nearly 80 children trading fishing tips with local firefighters at Yoctangee Park reveals what community connection truly looks like. Last month's "Fish with a Firefighter" event transformed emergency responders into mentors, placing fishing rods instead of fire hoses in their hands while building relationships that extend beyond crisis moments. These small-town interactions—where children leave with new skills and their very own fishing gear—create the invisible threads that strengthen our community fabric.

Meanwhile, significant developments are reshaping both our regional landscape and state institutions. A substantial $4.8 million in Clean Ohio funding stands ready to preserve Appalachian Ohio's natural treasures across 11 counties, while state prisons implement a $350,000 taser program following concerning safety incidents. These initiatives, though vastly different in scope, represent ongoing efforts to protect what matters—whether it's our pristine green spaces or the safety of those working in challenging environments.

⚡ Ohio prisons arm staff with tasers in $350,000 pilot program. Two facilities—Trumbull and Ross Correctional Institutions—are implementing Taser 10 devices that connect to body-worn cameras, activating recording when taken off safe mode. The program comes after a correctional officer was beaten to death on Christmas Day, the first such killing since 1996. Prison officials cite increasing violence among inmates as justification, while the Ohio Justice & Policy Center has called for pausing the program, warning that tasers can be lethal and pointing to a report linking 104 prison deaths to taser use between 2000-2017.

🎣 Firefighters swap hoses for fishing rods at community youth event. Nearly 80 children joined IAFF Local 300 members for "Fish with a Firefighter" at Chillicothe's Yoctangee Park, receiving fishing instruction and free fishing gear to take home. The April 26 event, organized through the Union Sportsmen's Alliance's Work Boots on the Ground program, allowed firefighters to connect with community members in a positive setting. "Kids won't get into fishing unless someone gives them the opportunity," said IAFF Local 300 Interim President Jason Miller. Beyond fostering outdoor appreciation, the event helped residents see firefighters outside emergency situations while building camaraderie among department volunteers.
