Pike County • May 13, 2025
Good morning, Pike County. As America approaches its 250th birthday, our small towns are proving they know how to celebrate big. The upcoming patriotic festivities at Bristol Village on May 17 will feature everything from historical presentations to Schmidt Sausage Haus offerings, blending American heritage with community fundraising for the new library campaign. These hometown celebrations remind us that national milestones are best experienced through local connections, with the sounds of fifes and drums echoing across our shared spaces.
Meanwhile, two local leaders are making impressions that extend far beyond our county lines. Waverly Police Chief John Winfield has earned statewide recognition as Ohio's 2025 D.A.R.E. Law Enforcement Executive of the Year for bringing anti-drug education to local schools. And at Ohio University Chillicothe, doors are opening for the next generation of healthcare heroes through their free Bobcat Nursing Camp on June 16, offering high schoolers hands-on experience in a field always hungry for passionate new talent.

๐บ๐ธ America's 250th birthday bash comes to small-town Ohio. The Garnet A. Wilson Public Library and Bristol Village are hosting a patriotic celebration on May 17 featuring the Heritage Fife and Drums and presenter Vane Scott's "The Many Faces of Old Glory" program. Visitors can enjoy Schmidt Sausage Haus food truck offerings, with proceeds supporting the new library campaign, and purchase engraved memorial bricks honoring military service members. The outdoor event will take place on the grassy area by the canal, with indoor accommodations available in case of bad weather.
๐ Small-town police chief earns statewide recognition for youth education. Waverly Police Chief John Winfield has been named the 2025 Ohio D.A.R.E. Law Enforcement Executive of the Year for his support of the anti-drug program in local schools. Since becoming chief in 2021, Winfield played a crucial role in bringing D.A.R.E. to Waverly City Schools at the start of the 2024-25 academic year. He will receive the prestigious award on July 7th during a ceremony at the D.A.R.E./SRO Conference in Sandusky, Ohio.
