Pickaway County • August 6, 2025
Good morning, Pickaway County. As September approaches, Ohio's veterans face a ticking clock for showcasing their artistic talents. The 2025 Ohio Veterans Art Exhibition is accepting submissions until September 1, offering military artists of all skill levels a platform to display their creativity at Columbus' Vern Riffe Center this fall. The exhibition welcomes diverse art forms, from paintings to 3D pieces, with no requirement to focus on military themes.
Meanwhile, Ohio's urban centers are experiencing a remarkable comeback in the moving trends. Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati have all landed spots on U-Haul's 2025 migration list, signaling a post-pandemic return to city living. In less positive news, a Franklin County judge has ordered a $3 million penalty in what officials call "one of the largest hazardous waste cases" after two defunct companies abandoned 150 million pounds of toxic electronic waste in Columbus warehouses.

🎨 Ohio veterans' art deadline looms as September approaches. The 2025 Ohio Veterans Art Exhibition, a partnership between the Ohio Department of Veterans Services and Ohio Arts Council, is accepting submissions until September 1. Military artists of all skill levels can submit various art forms, including 3D pieces, with artwork not necessarily needing to depict military service. Juror Daniel J. King, an artist, educator and U.S. Air Force veteran, will review submissions for the exhibition running October 21 to December 6 at the Vern Riffe Center in Columbus.
🚚 Ohio's major cities are magnets for U-Haul's one-way movers. Cleveland, Columbus, and Cincinnati all appear on the company's 2025 midyear migration trends list, highlighting a shift back to urban centers. According to U-Haul, "big cities and their expanding suburbs are back to greeting a robust inflow of U-Haul equipment" after the pandemic-driven exodus to less crowded areas. Michigan, Florida, and Indiana frequently appear as top origin states for people relocating to Ohio's major cities. Detroit and Chicago consistently rank among the top metro areas sending residents to the Buckeye State.
♻️ Toxic mountain of hazardous waste leads to $3 million penalty. Two defunct electronics-recycling companies were ordered to pay civil penalties by a Franklin County judge for abandoning 150 million pounds of cathode-ray tube glass in Columbus warehouses. The hazardous waste, containing dangerous levels of lead, required a $17 million cleanup effort by warehouse owners Garrison Southfield Park and Olymbec USA. Ohio Attorney General Dave Yost called it "one of the largest hazardous waste cases" his office has handled, with the warehouse owners previously settling for $250,000.
