Good morning, Pickaway County. Coffee enthusiasts across Columbus have reason to celebrate as five new cafés burst onto the scene this summer. From Blackened Coffee Co.'s plant-based breakfast offerings on High Street to Bitty & Beau's inspiring mission of employing individuals with intellectual disabilities in Upper Arlington, the city's caffeine landscape is transforming. Meanwhile, Cure Coffee & Cocktails prepares for its mid-June downtown debut, promising to satisfy both morning and evening cravings.

Beneath the surface of Ohio's lakes, a different kind of excitement awaits as trophy-worthy catches teem in public waters across the state. With Clear Fork Reservoir boasting premier largemouth bass and Pleasant Hill delivering exceptional crappie fishing, summer adventures beckon. The timing couldn't be better—Free Fishing Days arrive June 14-15, offering the perfect opportunity to explore how a 1974 election loss unexpectedly birthed Columbus Monthly magazine, which evolved from scrappy upstart to a $44 million media empire.

🗞️ A lost election sparked a media revolution in Columbus. Max Brown and his wife Lenore turned unemployment into opportunity by founding Columbus Monthly magazine in 1974 after Governor Gilligan's defeat. With initial investments of $120,000 and a mission to provide an irreverent, liberal voice different from the conservative Columbus Dispatch, the magazine quickly found success. The publication became known for its investigative journalism, profiles of powerful families, and willingness to challenge the city's establishment. After growing into a media company with 250 employees and $25 million in revenue, the Browns sold it for $44 million in 2007.
