Good morning, Pickaway County. The balance of power on Ohio's Supreme Court has become a high-stakes chess match, with four Republican candidates now vying to challenge Justice Jennifer Brunner—the last Democrat standing on the state's highest court. This political showdown comes after a 2021 law change added party labels to judicial ballots, dramatically altering the electoral landscape for Ohio's most consequential legal positions.

Film enthusiasts have something spectacular to look forward to this summer as CAPA's 56th Summer Movie Series transforms the historic Ohio Theatre into a cinematic time machine. With 28 classic films from "The Blues Brothers" to "The Princess Bride" screening between June and August, America's longest-running classic film series offers a nostalgic escape at just $6 per ticket. Meanwhile, a concerning study reveals most Central Ohio hospitals are investing less in community benefits than they receive in tax breaks—with Nationwide Children's Hospital showing a $121 million deficit according to researchers.

⚖️ Ohio Republicans battle for last Democratic Supreme Court seat. Four GOP candidates are competing to challenge Justice Jennifer Brunner, the lone Democrat on Ohio's highest court, in 2026. Brunner, a former Secretary of State, confirmed she's seeking reelection despite being the last Democrat holding statewide office after her colleagues were unseated last November. The race has drawn candidates including judges Joseph Burke, Andrew King, Ron Lewis, and Colleen O'Donnell, who each pitched Republican Party leaders. Republican prospects improved after a 2021 law change requiring party labels on Supreme Court ballots.

💰 Central Ohio hospitals fall short on community investment, study finds. According to the Lown Institute, seven of eight local hospitals spent less on community benefits than they received in tax breaks from 2020-2022. Nationwide Children's Hospital had the second-largest "fair share deficit" statewide at $121 million, while OhioHealth's Riverside Methodist ranked fourth with a $57.1 million shortfall. Hospital representatives dispute the methodology, arguing the calculations omit important factors like research expenditures and physician training.
