Pickaway County • February 3, 2025
Good morning, Pickaway County. After decades of trains literally splitting our community in two, Circleville is finally getting its "bridge over troubled railway." A whopping $20 million federal grant is set to transform downtown's South Court Street crossing from a daily frustration into a smooth-sailing overpass, meaning those 40 daily trains will no longer have emergency responders checking their watches or residents planning their commutes around the railroad schedule.
While the city prepares for this historic infrastructure upgrade, our local athletes are building bridges of their own to victory. Coltyn Reedy continues to dominate on the wrestling mat with impressive wins, while Philo's wrestling squad turned the Clay Davis Memorial tournament into their own highlight reel. And speaking of memorials, a touching tribute is in the works to honor Deputy Rex Emrick with a highway dedication - proving some legacies, like train delays, won't be forgotten.

🚂 Circleville secures $20 million to build crucial railroad overpass downtown. The federal funding will transform South Court Street's at-grade crossing into an overpass, solving a major traffic headache that currently splits the Ohio city in half. The project aims to eliminate delays caused by roughly 40 daily trains and improve emergency response times for the community. American Structurepoint has collaborated with city officials since 2019 to address the railroad crossing congestion, with the Ohio Department of Transportation recently confirming South Court Street as the ideal location. The City of Circleville and Ohio Rail Development Commission will contribute 20% in matching funds.
🤼 High school wrestler Coltyn Reedy continues dominant season with impressive victories. The second-ranked Sheridan athlete secured a hard-fought 7-3 decision against third-ranked Louden Dixon, followed by a first-period pin of Cooper Disbennett. Meanwhile, Philo wrestling team claimed first place among 12 teams at the Clay Davis Memorial tournament in Circleville. The Electrics dominated with four individual champions - Ryan South, Krystian South, Talan Bailey, and Gibson Swartz - leading them to victory with 209 total points. Bailey was particularly impressive, securing two pins and two technical falls en route to improving his record to 31-6.
🚔 Ohio lawmaker moves to honor fallen deputy with memorial highway. State Representative Brian Stewart has introduced a bill to rename part of State Route 56 after Detective Rex Emrick, who died on duty in 2021. The Pickaway County Sheriff's Deputy was a respected law enforcement officer and active community member, belonging to multiple local organizations. Sheriff Matthew Hafey praised the initiative, saying it would help preserve Emrick's legacy. The bill currently awaits committee assignment and official numbering.
