Good morning, Muskingum County. Democracy finds a way in Nelsonville, where election officials have crafted an ingenious legal solution to the city's ward dilemma. Using a rarely-invoked section of Ohio law, the Athens County Board of Elections cleared the path for November's City Council elections despite lacking defined districts—proving that even the most complex governmental transitions can be solved with a bit of creative thinking.
This weekend brings plenty of opportunities to enjoy our vibrant community. The popular Pop and Pour festival returns Saturday with local brews, wines, and the new addition of pedal tavern rides through downtown Zanesville. Meanwhile, OHIO Zanesville welcomes Charles Marsden, whose impressive background in developing mountain biking clubs and rock-climbing programs signals exciting developments for the campus's Recreation and Sport Services program—potentially bringing fresh outdoor opportunities to students and community members alike.

🗳️ Nelsonville solves its ward problem with a creative legal workaround. The Athens County Board of Elections found a solution that will allow Nelsonville to elect six City Council members in November despite lacking defined wards. Using a section of Ohio law covering township-to-city transitions, all council members will initially be elected at-large, with the new council later establishing wards. This creative solution addresses complications arising from Nelsonville's transition from charter to statutory government following last November's Issue 23 passage. The board also addressed the city's "December problem," ensuring continuous governance when most current council terms end November 30.
🍷 Zanesville's beloved beer and wine fest returns this weekend. The Muskingum County Community Foundation's annual Pop and Pour event will take place Saturday, July 19th, from 4-7 PM at the Zanesville-Muskingum County Welcome Center. For $30, attendees receive 10 tasting tokens to sample offerings from local breweries and wineries, with options for full pours and additional tokens available on site. This year introduces pedal tavern rides through downtown for $10 per person, with the indoor/outdoor venue ensuring the event proceeds rain or shine. All participants must be 21+ with photo ID.
