Good morning, Muskingum County. December will bring an unprecedented government vacuum to nearby Nelsonville, where voters' approval of Issue 23 has created a one-month period with no council members at all. This quirky political situation has candidates scrambling to file for these brief December terms, while officials work to develop ward maps for the new statutory government structure that won't be implemented until January. It's a real-life civics lesson playing out just down the road.

From political oddities to educational funding, Crooksville schools are eyeing a mill levy increase to support district-wide improvements. Meanwhile, history came alive in Newark as Governor Mike DeWine and the First Lady donned period costumes to celebrate the Ohio & Erie Canal's 200th anniversary. The bicentennial festivities featured historical toasts, photo displays, and even a young attendee presenting the governor with a special drawing – proving that connecting with our region's rich past can inspire Ohioans of all ages.

🗳️ Nelsonville faces a December with no council members. The Ohio city's voters approved Issue 23 last November, abolishing the charter government and creating a one-month gap when no council will exist. Candidates can now file to run for these one-month December terms, but current candidates for January positions cannot legally run for both. Meanwhile, the city is developing ward maps for its new statutory government structure, though these won't be approved until the new council takes office in January. The situation has created confusion for both candidates and election officials.
