🪣 Big muskie memories

Muskingum County • June 12, 2025

Good morning, Muskingum County. Standing 240 feet tall and weighing a staggering 27 million pounds, the Big Muskie once moved mountains with its massive 325-ton scoops. While the behemoth itself was largely dismantled when coal demand declined, its legendary bucket now stands preserved at Jesse Owens State Park with a newly dedicated historical marker—a towering testament to American industrial ambition that former employees recently gathered to honor.

Meanwhile, downtown Zanesville continues its revitalization as APG Architects cuts the ribbon on their new location, with principals Cole Ryan and Jeremy Davis hoping other businesses will follow their lead in investing in the heart of the city. On the transparency front, Crooksville Exempted Village School District has released its Combined Financial Report for fiscal years 2023-2024, now available on their website for community members interested in reviewing the district's financial management.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

🏗️ A behemoth mining machine's legacy lives on in Ohio. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources dedicated a historical marker for the Big Muskie Bucket at Jesse Owens State Park, honoring the largest walking dragline ever built. Weighing 27 million pounds and standing 240 feet tall, Big Muskie could move 325 tons of earth in a single scoop during its operational years from 1969 to 1999. Former employees gathered at the bucket for a photo opportunity during the dedication ceremony. Though the machine was mostly disassembled when coal demand declined, its bucket remains as a symbol of American industrial ambition and evolving energy production.
