Montgomery County • April 28, 2025
Good morning, Montgomery County. Nature's fierce power and remarkable resilience were on full display this weekend as flames engulfed an abandoned Dayton apartment building early Sunday morning. Firefighters battled the blaze defensively, using aerial ladder streams to contain the fire that damaged portions of the roof. Thankfully, no injuries were reported as investigators work to determine what sparked this dramatic early morning incident.
In more uplifting developments, new life soars above Carillon Park where eagle couple Willa and Scout are now proud parents to at least two eaglets—possibly three! These remarkable youngsters will grow to their parents' size in just seven weeks, with first flights expected by late June. Meanwhile, local schools are making headway against chronic absenteeism, with districts like Valley View reducing rates through family engagement and creating environments where students genuinely want to be present—proving that connection, not just incentives, drives meaningful change.

🔥 Abandoned Dayton apartment building erupts in flames early Sunday. Firefighters responded around 6:09 a.m. to the 1900 block of Riverside Drive, finding heavy fire conditions on the second floor. Due to the advanced fire conditions and collapse concerns, crews fought the blaze defensively using multiple hose lines and aerial ladder streams. The fire damaged part of the building's roof, but fortunately no injuries were reported. The Dayton Fire Department's Fire Investigations Unit is investigating the cause and asking anyone with information to contact them at 937-333-TIPS.
🦅 Carillon Park eagles welcome new eaglets after dramatic partner change. Willa, who lost her mate Orv in October, has bonded with a new eagle named Scout, and together they've welcomed at least two baby eagles. The oldest eaglet is 22 days old, while the second is around 20 days old, with a possible third eaglet that's slightly younger. These young birds will grow rapidly, reaching their parents' size in just seven weeks, with the first expected to fly around June 23rd. Scout and Willa are now extremely busy gathering food to support their offspring's remarkable growth.
🏫 Schools see progress in battle against chronic absenteeism. Ohio's statewide chronic absenteeism rate decreased from 26.8% to 25.6% last year, though still higher than pre-pandemic levels of 16.7%. Districts are moving beyond simple incentives to address root causes—transportation issues, childcare needs, and student disengagement. Valley View reduced its rate from 17.8% to 14.8% through intentional strategies like family engagement and contests, while Dayton Public Schools found that creating engaging activities helps students want to attend. Administrators agree that making school a place where students want to be is crucial to improving attendance.
