Meigs County • October 7, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. Since 1947, a quiet literary powerhouse has been operating right in our backyard. Ohio University Press has been putting Athens on the global publishing map for over 75 years, producing dozens of scholarly works annually that reach readers from Australia to South Africa. Their commitment to African studies, Appalachian culture, and emerging scholars demonstrates that our small corner of Ohio has a surprisingly international reach.
Meanwhile, local innovation continues to thrive as Stirling Ultracold donates cutting-edge freezer technology to OU's Innovation Center, capable of chilling to a mind-boggling -100Β°C. And speaking of local talent, the Wahama High School marching band recently showcased their "Stained Glass" program at a regional competition, proving that artistic expression flourishes here in many formsβfrom the written word to scientific advancement to musical performance.

π Ohio University Press puts Athens on the global publishing map. Since 1947, the Press has been Ohio's oldest scholarly publishing house, producing 25-30 books annually with specializations in African studies, Appalachian culture, and scholarly nonfiction. With a global distribution network spanning Australia, Germany, the UK, and South Africa, the Press supports authors worldwide through initiatives like the Hollis Summers Poetry Prize and the First Book Fund for emerging scholars. The Press also offers valuable publishing internships to OU students while celebrating local talent, including Athens-based illustrators and Appalachian authors.
βοΈ Local freezer company donates cutting-edge technology to Ohio University. Stirling Ultracold gifted a VAULT100 ULT freezer to the Ohio University Innovation Center, strengthening a longstanding partnership between the two organizations. The freezer, which can maintain temperatures as low as -100Β°C, will be used to store hundreds of biological samples in the center's shared labs. This donation saves the university over $13,000 in equipment costs while supporting both the university and the broader Southeast Ohio community's ultra-cold storage needs. Stirling Ultracold, which manufactures environmentally friendly freezers using patented free-piston Stirling engine technology, maintains its headquarters in Athens, Ohio.
