🏢 Vacant lot dilemma

Good morning, Meigs County. Sometimes $3,000 can spark quite the conversation. That's the case in Parkersburg, where iTech owner Mike Williams' bid for a vacant downtown lot has the Urban Renewal Authority weighing job creation against property value. The proposal promises 10 new positions to add to his growing company, but council members are hesitating over the significant gap between the offer and the property's acquisition cost—a $193,000 difference that's giving officials pause until October.

The entertainment scene is hitting nostalgic notes as the Smoot Theatre kicks off its season with Beach Boys tribute band Sail On this Friday at the new, earlier time of 7 p.m. Meanwhile, families looking for weekend activities should mark their calendars for Saturday's Worldwide Day of Play at Discovery World, where the first 100 kids get free admission. As Executive Director Wendy Shriver aptly notes, "Play is the spark that ignites discovery"—a fitting reminder as summer transitions to fall.

🏙️ Downtown business owner's $3,000 offer for vacant lot sparks debate. The Parkersburg Urban Renewal Authority tabled iTech owner Mike Williams' bid to purchase a Fifth Street property for expansion. Williams, whose company has grown from 4 to 30 employees, proposed a $200,000 investment to build a brick building that would create 10 new jobs. Council members expressed concern about the low offer compared to the $196,000 spent to acquire and demolish the problematic property. The Authority will reconsider the proposal at their October meeting.
