Good morning, Meigs County. Back-to-school season in Athens is colliding with major roadwork as the US-33 W off-ramp to SR-682 closes until Halloween. The timing couldn't be more challenging for parents navigating school drop-offs, though ODOT defends the $3.89 million roundabout project with impressive safety statistics: 76% fewer injury crashes and 35% fewer accidents overall. Meanwhile, Mason County's school board is tackling its own challenges, from personnel shuffles to landscaping contractors who apparently need as much supervision as the students.

Tragedy struck Athens earlier this month when police responded to a West Union Street shooting, leading to a tense standoff with 70-year-old Joseph Jennings. After evacuating neighbors due to a note warning of explosives, officers attempted negotiations before Jennings took his own life. Authorities have confirmed no officers discharged weapons during the incident, and investigators aren't searching for additional suspects in the case.
