Meigs County • August 11, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. The floor beneath your feet is something many of us take for granted, but for some local children, it's their nightly bed. That's changing thanks to Sleep in Heavenly Peace volunteers who recently constructed 20 beds during their first community build in Jackson County. With collection boxes appearing throughout the area for twin bedding donations, the initiative is transforming "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town" from slogan to reality.
The real estate market continues its summer sizzle with nearly $4 million in Athens County transactions, highlighted by a $550,000 lakefront Glouster property. Meanwhile, adventure enthusiasts are paddling, pedaling, and sampling their way through Marietta's River Trails & Ales Festival. The annual event has drawn over 1,000 visitors to explore hidden waterways and celebrate local brews, showcasing the natural beauty of the Mid-Ohio Valley beyond just a weekend getaway.

🛏️ Jackson County volunteers build beds for kids sleeping on floors. Sleep in Heavenly Peace (SHP) Jackson County held its first successful "bed build" on August 9, with about 30 community members constructing 20 beds for children in need. The initiative follows SHP's motto that "No kid sleeps on the floor in our town," but extends the mission to the entire county. Community members can support by donating new twin bedding at various collection boxes throughout the county or making monetary contributions through the Jackson County Community Foundation. Applications for families needing beds will open next week through the organization's website.
🏠 Athens County real estate market sees nearly $4 million in transactions. Property transfers during early August 2025 ranged from modest $25,000 parcels to a lakefront property in Glouster fetching nearly $550,000. Notable sales included commercial properties in Athens, with a North Lancaster Street building selling for $415,000 and a South High Street property changing hands for $420,000. Residential transactions dominated the market, with several Athens properties selling in the $189,000-$420,000 range, while rural properties in Alexander Township, New Marshfield, and Stewart rounded out the diverse market activity.
🚣♀️ Marietta's River Trails & Ales Festival brings outdoor adventure to life. The annual weekend event combines kayaking, mountain biking, trail runs, and craft beer tastings, drawing over 1,000 visitors from across the country. Friday's Veto Lake Paddle allowed kayakers to explore hidden inlets and observe wildlife in the lily pad-covered waters. More than 50 dedicated volunteers help coordinate activities for all skill levels, with Saturday's Beer Fest featuring Ohio breweries and live music in Muskingum Park. Festival organizers aim to showcase the beauty and recreational opportunities of Marietta and the Mid-Ohio Valley beyond just one weekend.
