Good morning, Meigs County. From council chambers to championship waters, our community is making waves this week. Belpre City Council is advancing key resolutions for tax budgets and housing programs, while the engineering firm working on Civitan Park prepares to present exciting plans next month. Meanwhile, Mayor Abdella celebrated some positive news—the health department's recent state accreditation marks an important milestone for local healthcare services.
In a stunning athletic achievement, Danish exchange student Nanna Kehr rowed her way to gold at the SRAA National Championship, proving international talent flourishes in our local schools. She wasn't alone in bringing home hardware, as Marietta High's Madi Lovejoy and Wilkey Smith claimed the school's first-ever national rowing championship. These victories arrive as Parkersburg residents engage with their city council over proposed utility fee increases, with final votes scheduled for June 10.

🏛️ Belpre City Council advances three key resolutions in Monday meeting. The council approved first readings for tax budget, public depository legislation, and participation in the Community Housing Impact and Preservation program. Mayor Susan Abdella announced the reappointment of Joel Whitacher to the Marietta Belpre Health Board and celebrated the health department's recent state accreditation. The engineering firm working on Civitan Park will present plans and funding options on June 9. Additionally, the mayor will soon distribute the Emergency Operations Plan to council members for review.
🚣♀️ Danish exchange student rows to national gold in stunning upset. Parkersburg High School's Nanna Kehr claimed the Girls Senior Single gold medal at the SRAA Scholastic Rowing National Championship, finishing more than two seconds ahead of her closest competitor. The 16-year-old from Denmark wasn't sure how she'd fare against America's best rowers but proved her talent on the choppy waters of New Jersey's Cooper River. Marietta High School also celebrated as Madi Lovejoy and Wilkey Smith won gold in the Girls Senior Double, marking the school's first-ever national championship. Both Lovejoy and Smith will continue their rowing careers in college—at UCF and Louisville respectively.
💰 Parkersburg City Council approves first readings of utility fee hikes. The council voted 6-2 to advance a $4 monthly sanitation fee increase and unanimously approved an 18.47% sewer rate increase to be phased in over four years. Residents argued the sanitation fee should go directly to employee wages, as staffing shortages have disrupted trash collection and led to suspended recycling services. Finance Director Eric Jiles explained the increase would address a $160,000 deficit and fund equipment purchases, while Councilman Borkowski suggested privatization might be the "elephant in the room." Both ordinances will face final votes at the June 10 council meeting.
