Good morning, Meigs County. Behind every broadcast you enjoy lies the dedication of emerging journalists honing their craft. Four WOUB students just received a significant boost to their educational journeys, each awarded $1,000 for excellence in broadcasting through memorial awards honoring two pioneers who shaped public media. These financial lifelines help promising talents like Audrey Paquette and Donovan Varney continue developing the skills that will bring tomorrow's stories to your screens and speakers.
While Athens foodies are buzzing about culinary gems that rescue students from dining hall monotony—from Village Bakery's breakfast delights to Big Mamma's burrito alternatives—the community recently gathered for a more solemn purpose. Memorial Day at Parkersburg's City Park saw American Legion Post 15 leading a moving tribute to fallen heroes, complete with wreath-laying and name readings, reminding us all that our freedoms were earned through ultimate sacrifices that deserve our remembrance.

🎓 Four WOUB students awarded $1000 each for broadcast excellence. The Edmund A. Williams Technology Oriented Leadership Award and Jeffrey R. Spalding Memorial Award honored two former WOUB employees who significantly impacted public broadcasting. Recipients Audrey Paquette, Addison Kearns, Haley Richardson, and Donovan Varney expressed gratitude for the financial support that will help them continue their journalism education. The awards recognize outstanding contributions to WOUB Public Media, Ohio University's PBS and NPR member station where students gain professional broadcasting experience. Both namesakes dedicated decades to WOUB, with Williams later helping develop closed captioning and digital television at PBS.
🇺🇸 Parkersburg honors fallen heroes in solemn Memorial Day ceremony. Community members gathered at City Park Monday morning to pay tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in military service. American Legion Post 15 representatives led the event, which included the National Anthem, wreath-laying, and reading the names of veterans who died in the past year. "Our freedoms are not free. They were earned with the ultimate sacrifice of others," emphasized speaker Gregory Burdette. Organizers hope for greater community participation in future ceremonies to properly honor soldiers who can no longer hear "thank you for your service."
