Meigs County • April 24, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. After 121 years of standing tall, the GFWC Parkersburg Woman's Club's historic clubhouse is showing off its fresh face. The century-old building has received a complete restoration of its wraparound porch and landscaping, demonstrating that sometimes even the most enduring landmarks need a little TLC. Club members and city officials will gather Thursday to celebrate this preservation triumph for a structure that's been under their stewardship since 1915.
Meanwhile, the spirit of service flourishes throughout our region. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is seeking nominations for the 2025 Jenco Awards, honoring everyday heroes making extraordinary differences in their communities. This celebration of selflessness pairs beautifully with Belpre High School's new Interact Club, whose "Peace Pole" installation at Civitan Park demonstrates that our youngest citizens are already finding creative ways to bridge divides and strengthen community bonds.

🏛️ Historic clubhouse gets a much-needed facelift after 121 years. The GFWC Parkersburg Woman's Club is celebrating completed renovations to their century-old clubhouse with a private event Thursday. Using city grant money and endowment funds, the club fully restored the wraparound porch and landscaping of the 19th-century building they've owned since 1915. Invited guests including club members, city officials, and project contractors will enjoy a tour and history presentation. The celebration coincides with the anniversary of GFWC's founding in 1890, marking 121 years of community service by the Parkersburg chapter.
🏆 Jenco Awards honor everyday heroes making a difference in Appalachia. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio is accepting nominations through June 3 for the 2025 awards, recognizing individuals who serve their communities outside of paid positions. Named after Father Lawrence Martin Jenco, who continued serving others even while held captive in Lebanon, the awards celebrate service across arts, education, development, environment, and health sectors. Since 2002, over 90 dedicated individuals from Ohio's 32-county Appalachian region have received this prestigious recognition of their community impact.
🕊️ Students plant peace amid division in small Ohio town. The Belpre Rotary Club and National Honor Society installed a "Peace Pole" at Civitan Park, decorated with student handprints and peace messages. This collaborative project marks the first initiative of the newly formed Interact Club at Belpre High School, designed to bridge generational gaps in the community. Rotary President Jeff Totten emphasized the importance of youth visibility in community service, stating, "We know we have to change the mindset of everybody else in this community to support you kids." The pole installation also commemorated Earth Day while demonstrating students' eagerness to be active community participants.
