Meigs County • April 11, 2025
Good morning, Meigs County. The calendar has officially turned toward Earth Day, and Ohio University is rolling out the green carpet with their April 14 celebration. From electric vehicles to thrift shopping, poetry readings and live music from The Houseguest, the Walter Hall Rotunda will transform into a sustainability showcase where community members can mingle with environmental leaders and celebrate local green initiatives.
Meanwhile, the cultural landscape is equally vibrant across campus. Robert O'Hara's provocative comedy "Bootycandy" brings a Black queer odyssey to the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater starting April 10, while journalism senior Reese Thompson prepares to graduate after anchoring NewsWatch and covering the federal government during an election year. As this third-generation Bobcat puts it, choosing Ohio University was "the best decision of my life" – a testament to the hands-on opportunities that continue to shape our community's future leaders.

🌍 Ohio University's Earth Day celebration invites the entire community to join. The April 14 event will showcase campus and community sustainability efforts from 12-4 p.m. in Walter Hall Rotunda. Attendees will hear from keynote speakers including OHIO Professor Geoff Dabelko and Athens Mayor Steve Patterson, while also celebrating the 2025 Sustainability Award recipients. The free celebration includes a thrift store, EV showcase, poetry readings, and live music from local band The Houseguest. All campus and community members are encouraged to attend and support local environmental initiatives.
🎭 'Bootycandy' brings Black queer odyssey to Ohio University stage. The semi-autobiographical comedy by Robert O'Hara follows Sutter, a young gay Black man, through childhood and sexual exploration in a series of provocative vignettes. Directed by Devin Ty Franklin as an M.F.A. thesis production, the play uses humor to challenge social constructs while drawing on African performance traditions. Performances run April 10-19 at the Elizabeth Evans Baker Theater, with student rush tickets available free through Arts For Ohio. The production contains sexually explicit material and includes a post-show talk-back on April 17.
🎓 Third-generation Bobcat calls Ohio University "best decision of my life." Reese Thompson, a journalism major graduating this May, has embraced hands-on opportunities at WOUB, anchoring NewsWatch and reporting for various campus programs. Her college journey included covering federal government during an election year through the Scripps Semester in DC program and working the "cops and courts" beat. Thompson treasures Sunday dinners with fellow WOUB seniors and having her high school broadcast teacher watch her anchor. After graduation, she hopes to travel before starting at a local news station, crediting WOUB's training opportunities as "unbeatable."
Eastern Eagles showed no mercy in their 16-0 demolition of Federal Hocking, leaving the Lancers still searching for their first win of the season. The Eagles soared to a 5-1 record with the victory, while Federal Hocking sank to 0-4 in what can only be described as a baseball beatdown of biblical proportions.Meanwhile, Ritchie County and Wahama delivered a wild west shootout with the Rebels escaping with a narrow 13-12 victory. The seesaw affair finally tilted in Ritchie County's favor, improving their record to 2-6 while sending the White Falcons to a 3-6 mark in a game where the pitchers might want to request witness protection.
