Good morning, Meigs County. The spotlight is shining brightly on WOUB's talented student journalists this week as they clinch prestigious awards from the Society of Professional Journalists. The entire NewsWatch staff received recognition for excellence in television news coverage, with four individual Ohio University students earning special honors. These accolades don't just represent trophies on a shelf—they're validation that our region is nurturing the next generation of media professionals who will shape how we understand our world.
While some young adults are building journalism careers, others are simply having a blast on roller skates. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Parkersburg transformed an ordinary Thursday into a memorable family night at Skate Country, rewarding dedicated club members with free skating fun. And for the adults seeking their own kind of recreation, Parkersburg's City Council is considering making downtown's designated drinking zone available year-round—proving that sometimes the best community improvements come with both wheels and a refreshing beverage.

🛼 Kids roll into fun at Boys & Girls Clubs skating event. The Mary Street site of Boys & Girls Clubs of Parkersburg hosted a special family engagement night at Skate Country last Thursday. Club members who attended at least 104 days during the year were invited to bring their families to the free celebration. Children like Hazel, Zoe, Harper, Lucas, Hadleigh, Aniah, and Olivia enjoyed skating together while staff members Jazlyn Frieson and Dasia Russell checked in the excited guests. According to surveys, youth who attend the Club at least twice weekly report that the organization has been life-saving for them.
🍺 Parkersburg plans to make downtown drinking zone available year-round. City Council will consider expanding the Public Outdoor Designated Area (PODA) ordinance that allows people to carry alcoholic beverages between participating businesses. The change comes after downtown stakeholders suggested removing seasonal limitations to include events like Winterfest and St. Patrick's Day. Council will also vote on two Southwood Park resolutions—designating part of it as a bird sanctuary and relocating an unused event tent to the Welcome Center. The meeting is scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Municipal Building.
