Good morning, Meigs County. The final credits have rolled at the Athena Grand, marking the end of an era where $5 tickets and empty theaters made every moviegoer feel like a VIP with their own private screening room. While the closure leaves a popcorn-scented void in our entertainment landscape, the historic Athena Cinema is stepping up to expand its repertoire beyond indie darlings, ensuring the silver screen keeps shimmering on East State Street.
Speaking of cultural bright spots, classical music is getting a mall makeover this Sunday as the Williamstown Strings transform the space near Boot Barn into an impromptu concert hall. And for those who prefer their entertainment in the great outdoors, the Master Naturalist Program is celebrating 15 years of turning curious nature lovers into certified ecology experts. From silver screens to string sections to forest scenes, there's no shortage of ways to enrich your weekend.

🎬 Small-town theater's closure leaves moviegoers scrambling for alternatives in Athens. The Athena Grand on East State Street shut down January 5th after years of financial struggles and COVID-related setbacks. Local film enthusiasts must now turn to The Athena Cinema downtown or trek to Movies 10 in Nelsonville for their cinema fix. The beloved $5 tickets and friendly staff at Athena Grand will be missed by regular patrons who often had theaters to themselves. The historic Athena Cinema, owned by the university since 2001, hopes to fill the void by expanding its mainstream offerings beyond independent films.
🎻 Free concert brings classical charm to local mall this Sunday. The Williamstown Strings, led by scholarship winner Ashley Clark, will perform at the Grand Central Mall in Vienna as part of the Artsbridge Winter Music Series. The hour-long performance, sponsored by Warfield Realty, takes place near the Boot Barn entrance from 1:30-2:30 pm. While some seating is provided, attendees are welcome to bring their own chairs to the free event. The series concludes March 2nd with performances by Parkersburg South High School and Edison Middle School.
