Good morning, Marion County. Columbus Zoo is making history with not one but two pregnant Asian elephants—a first-ever double blessing that could arrive any day now. The impending births represent a significant win for conservation efforts, adding crucial genetic diversity to the endangered species while making these calves the first to receive vaccines against the leading cause of death in zoo elephants. Meanwhile, the mother elephants are staying limber with "elephant yoga" during their 22-month pregnancies.

Looking for weekend plans that won't break the bank? Governor DeWine just announced a free fishing weekend June 14-15, when anyone can cast a line in Ohio's waterways without a license. The timing couldn't be better, with the Division of Wildlife having stocked over 46 million fish this year alone. While locals enjoy these summer activities, Ohio State's international students remain focused on their studies despite political tensions, with one Chinese astrophysicist expressing confidence in the rational approach to student visas.

🎓 Chinese student shrugs off threat to revoke international visas. An Ohio State astrophysics undergraduate from China believes the U.S. government would act "rationally" rather than canceling all Chinese student visas. He points out that American universities benefit financially from international enrollments and value the academic contributions of foreign students. Despite political tensions, he remains focused on his dark matter research and hopes to complete his education in America. However, he acknowledges that mass visa revocations would make the U.S. "no longer a good choice for studying."

🎣 Ohio offers free fishing weekend for all residents June 14-15. No license will be required on these days for anyone 16 and older to fish in any public Ohio waterway, including Lake Erie and inland lakes. The special weekend, announced by Governor Mike DeWine, aims to encourage outdoor recreation while maintaining all other fishing regulations. Ohio's diverse waterways support robust fish populations, with the Division of Wildlife stocking over 46 million fish in 2024 alone. Anglers generated $5.5 billion in economic impact for the state in 2022, with about 1.7 million Ohio adults participating in fishing activities.

🐘 Double elephant joy hits Columbus Zoo for the first time ever. Two Asian elephants, Phoebe and Sunny, are pregnant simultaneously, with one due any day now. The births will significantly boost conservation efforts for the endangered species, as father Sabu has no living offspring and will add valuable genetic diversity to the dwindling population. The calves will make history as the first at the zoo to receive vaccines against elephant endotheliotropic herpesvirus, the leading cause of death among zoo elephants. Keepers are preparing the elephants with "elephant yoga," helping them stay limber for health monitoring during their 22-month pregnancies.
