Good morning, Marion County. Agricultural excellence is blooming across our region as three West Liberty-Salem students achieved the prestigious Ohio FFA State Degree, marking a significant milestone in their leadership journey. These young agricultural standouts—Owen Barger, Shyanne McClintick, and Ella Vondenhuevel—have demonstrated the exceptional commitment that places them on track for even higher national recognition, a testament to the strong agricultural education programs nurturing tomorrow's leaders.

In other developments around our community, Ohio State University is addressing two very different challenges. International PhD student Prasanna Oruganti has regained her immigration status after a federal lawsuit resolved what appeared to be part of a larger situation affecting foreign students nationwide. Meanwhile, as tick-borne illnesses surge across Ohio—with Lyme disease cases increasing 35-fold since 2010—OSU has launched a new testing laboratory where residents can mail tick specimens for $49.99 to identify potential health threats.

🌽 Three West Liberty-Salem students earn prestigious Ohio FFA State Degree. Owen Barger, Shyanne McClintick, and Ella Vondenhuevel have achieved one of the highest honors in the Ohio FFA Association, marking a significant milestone in their agricultural education journey. The State FFA Degree recognizes exceptional leadership, requiring at least two years of membership, completion of a Supervised Agricultural Experience, and extensive involvement in FFA programs. This achievement places these students on the path toward the even more selective American FFA Degree. The school acknowledged the support team, including van driver Ashlee Smith and chaperones who helped these students succeed.

🎓 International Ohio State PhD student's immigration status restored after legal battle. Prasanna Oruganti, who faced sudden revocation of her status due to a minor traffic violation, filed a federal lawsuit in April. The case was dismissed after Judge Algenon Marbley granted a temporary restraining order. Oruganti, from India, is pursuing a PhD in agricultural engineering and was authorized to stay until 2029. Her case appears part of a larger situation where the federal government has restored records for hundreds or thousands of international students whose database entries were abruptly terminated.

🕷️ Ohio State launches tick testing lab as cases skyrocket statewide. The new laboratory service can identify dangerous ticks and test them for diseases like Lyme, which has increased 35-fold in Ohio since 2010. For $49.99, Ohioans who find ticks on themselves or their animals can mail the specimens to the Buckeye Tick Test lab for pathogen analysis. Dr. Tim McDermott explains that Ohio now has five medically important tick species, with the eastern and southern regions being hotspots. Climate change and wildlife movement are contributing to the spread of ticks across the state, with children ages 5-14 being particularly vulnerable to Lyme disease.
