Good morning, Marion County. A landmark women's health study that has tracked more than 40,000 women since the 1990s is facing an uncertain future as Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center prepares to lose its $5.1 million contract in September. The groundbreaking research, which has transformed our understanding of hormone therapy, osteoporosis, and cancer prevention in older women, will stop collecting new data when federal funding ends—marking the close of a scientific chapter that has shaped women's healthcare for decades.

On a brighter note, local talent is ready to shine at the Marion Palace Theatre where performer Sara Grote brings her "Life's A Song" concert on May 17, blending folk, pop, Broadway and soul influences with personal storytelling. And for those planning ahead, the Ohio State Fair received a million-dollar safety upgrade for 2025, enhancing security with new metal detectors, perimeter fencing, and family-friendly additions like a breastfeeding pod—improvements you'll first experience during this year's fair running July 23-August 3.

🔬 Landmark women's health study loses federal funding, impacting Ohio State research. The Trump administration's decision to terminate the Women's Health Initiative affects Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center, which will lose its $5.1 million contract in September. The center has been analyzing data from 10,000 women, studying cancer survivors, chronic disease management, and cognitive decline predictors. The groundbreaking study, which began in the 1990s, has produced important discoveries about hormone therapy, osteoporosis, and cancer prevention in older women. All four regional centers will stop collecting data from more than 40,000 women still participating in the study.
