🦃 Turkey comeback

Good morning, Marion County. The sound of spring is unmistakable across Ohio's woodlands as turkey hunting season opened with an impressive bang—4,281 wild turkeys harvested in just the first weekend. It's a remarkable conservation success story considering these magnificent birds had completely disappeared from Ohio by 1904, with the first modern hunting season in 1966 yielding just 12 birds. Today's healthy population is a testament to decades of careful wildlife management.

From wild game to culinary fame, a decade of authentic Middle Eastern magic is unfolding at Yemeni Restaurant on Cleveland Avenue, where Chef Najameddine Gabbar's lamb-forward menu has quietly become a local treasure. Meanwhile, Ohio State's Artist Laureate Kevin McClatchy is proving the power of performance through two innovative programs—using Shakespeare to connect with children on the autism spectrum and helping veterans share their stories through his one-man show "Scrap Heap." Both efforts highlight how storytelling bridges our deepest divides.

☕️ What's Brewing Locally

Brewing Locally Image

🦃 Ohio hunters bag over 4,200 wild turkeys in season's opening weekend. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources reported 4,281 turkeys were harvested during the first weekend of spring hunting season, slightly down from last year's 4,367. Belmont County led with 148 birds checked, followed by Meigs and Guernsey counties. Wild turkeys, which had disappeared from Ohio by 1904, were successfully reintroduced in the 1950s, with the first modern hunting season opening in 1966 with just 12 birds harvested. Recent positive brood surveys suggest a healthy turkey population, with an average of 2.9 poults per hen observed in 2024.

🍛 Yemeni Restaurant serves up a decade of authentic Middle Eastern magic. Chef Najameddine Gabbar's modest Cleveland Avenue eatery has quietly earned a reputation for comforting, spice-infused dishes, particularly its celebrated lamb offerings. The restaurant combines welcoming hospitality with distinctive flavors, including the must-try hummus with lamb appetizer and signature dishes like lamb haneeth and bubbling fahsa stew. While lamb dominates, plenty of chicken, vegetarian, and fish options round out a menu that's generously spiced but not spicy, all served in a cozy, fabric-laden space that feels like a warm hug.

🎭 Theatre professor connects communities through powerful performances across Ohio. Kevin McClatchy, Ohio State's 2024-25 Artist Laureate, has spent the academic year touring two impactful programs throughout the state. His Shakespeare and Autism project uses theatrical exercises to help educators connect with children on the autism spectrum, showing measurable improvements in participants' language and social skills. McClatchy also performs his one-man show "Scrap Heap," which explores veterans' reintegration into civilian life, followed by discussions with local veterans groups. His work embodies his belief that humans are "hardwired to tell stories" and that shared storytelling experiences can bridge differences.
