🚧 Detour dynamics

Marion County • April 1, 2025

Good morning, Marion County. The landscape of local commutes is about to transform as major closures hit the SR 161 interchange this week. Starting October 22, westbound drivers will navigate a new reality that includes detours through the Eiterman Road roundabout, with similar changes affecting eastbound traffic the following day. These disruptions, lasting until Summer 2025, represent the necessary growing pains of infrastructure improvement—a temporary inconvenience for long-term gain.

Beyond our roadways, Marion County recently said farewell to two remarkable women whose lives exemplified excellence in different spheres. Jan Bright's 30-year nursing career at Memorial Hospital touched countless lives, while Vesta Whitley Garwood's pioneering work in coffee chemistry at Nestlé broke barriers in scientific research. Both women, who passed away at 91 and 96 respectively, leave behind legacies that extend far beyond their professional achievements—reminding us that a life well-lived creates ripples that continue long after we're gone.

🚧 Major road closures hit Union County's SR 161 interchange this week. The westbound ramp from SR 161 to U.S. 33 northbound will close October 22 until Summer 2025, with traffic redirected through the Eiterman Road roundabout. Similarly, the eastbound ramp to U.S. 33 southbound closes October 23 for the same duration. These closures are part of the ongoing SR 161/U.S. 33 Interchange Improvements project. Motorists are urged to remain alert, reduce speed, and watch for stopped traffic while passing through construction zones.
