Good morning, Licking County. Spring is bringing a wave of community spirit to our area, with students from seven local schools rolling up their sleeves at Hollander Pool for their annual service project. These young leaders from the Licking County League LEADS program tackled everything from unclogged gutters to window washing, transforming the Newark facility into a summer-ready oasis that will soon welcome swimmers of all ages.

Meanwhile, excellence is on display both on and off the court in our region. The Logan Chieftains tennis team delivered a flawless 5-0 sweep against Reynoldsburg, showcasing their dominance with precision and skill. And speaking of impressive performances, seven Northwest Ohio men just graduated from the elite Ohio Fire Academy after completing a grueling 468-hour program. These newly minted firefighters, now armed with multiple certifications beyond the standard requirements, stand ready to protect and serve their communities.

🏊 Young leaders dive into community service at Hollander Pool. Students from the Licking County League LEADS program rolled up their sleeves for their annual service project on April 29, 2025. Participants from multiple schools tackled various tasks including unclogging gutters, pulling weeds, picking up trash, and washing windows at the Newark facility. The collaborative effort brought together students from Newark Catholic, Licking Heights, Lakewood, Granville, Northridge, Heath, and Licking Valley to prepare the community pool for the upcoming season.

🎾 Logan Chieftains dominate tennis court with perfect 5-0 sweep. The boys' tennis team showcased strength and precision in their commanding road victory against Reynoldsburg. All five matches went in favor of the Chieftains, demonstrating their skill across the board. The clean sweep highlights the team's strong performance as they continue their successful season.

🔥 Seven Northwest Ohio men join elite 2025 firefighter class. The State Fire Marshal's Ohio Fire Academy celebrated its first graduating class of the year, including cadets from Lima, Celina, St. Marys, Willshire, Van Wert, and Continental. These graduates completed an intensive 10-week, 468-hour program that's academically challenging and physically demanding. The academy offers the only program in Ohio where students earn eight additional certifications beyond their Firefighter I & II state certifications. These newly qualified firefighters are now ready to serve their communities in the fire service.

The Yellowjackets buzzed past Watkins Memorial 5-3 in Monday's league matchup, improving to 8-6 on the season while the Warriors dropped to 6-4. Mt. Vernon's timely victory sets up a compelling Tuesday showdown with the 9-2 Licking Valley Panthers, who are fresh off dismantling Newark Catholic, while Watkins Memorial will look to regroup against the suddenly surging Blue Devils of Zanesville.

Licking Heights delivered a softball masterclass Monday, shutting out winless Zanesville 17-0 in a game that was over before it started. The Hornets (10-8) continue to find their sting while the Blue Devils (0-14) are still searching for their first victory of the season.Mt. Vernon's pitching staff was dealing Monday, blanking Watkins Memorial 10-0 to improve to an impressive 14-2 on the season. The Yellowjackets' dominance continues to buzz through the Licking County league while the Warriors slip to 11-7.Johnstown-Monroe outlasted Utica 16-10 in Monday's slugfest, with both teams apparently forgetting to pack their pitching. The Johnnies (7-6) and Redskins (7-9) combined for 26 runs in what must have had scorekeepers developing carpal tunnel syndrome.

🙏 In Remembrance

Ronald D. McDonald

Ronald D. McDonald, 78, of Granville, Ohio, passed away on April 27, 2025, at Mt. Carmel East Hospital. A Vietnam War Navy veteran, he worked for 35 years at Puritan Churchill Company/EcoLab as a District Sales Manager before returning to the insurance industry. McDonald, who was appointed a Kentucky Colonel, enjoyed golf, fishing, yard work, and was an active officer in the Evergreen Hills Association. He is survived by his wife of 58½ years, Dr. Donna McDonald, his children, grandchildren, mother, and sisters, with a funeral service scheduled for May 2, 2025, at McPeek Hoekstra Hoskinson Funeral Home.
