🧠 Mental matters

Licking County • March 28, 2025

Good morning, Licking County. Mental health support is taking center stage as the MHR Committee opens its doors to community members next week. This April 2nd gathering offers residents a voice in shaping local mental health and substance use initiatives—a vital opportunity in our increasingly wellness-focused world. The free meeting demonstrates the ongoing commitment to addressing these critical needs across both Licking and Knox counties.

In other local developments, the landscape of community events is evolving, with Ohio's Division of Liquor Control highlighting responsible alcohol service options for nonprofits. Meanwhile, a significant leadership shake-up has occurred at the Sheriff's Office, where 20-year veteran Captain Wes Wagner resigned following an investigation into his handling of an inappropriate inmate-officer relationship. The case raises important questions about oversight and accountability within our correctional facilities.

🍺 Ohio issues vital reminders for safe, legal event alcohol sales. The Division of Liquor Control highlights temporary permits that enable nonprofits to serve alcohol responsibly at community events. In 2024, the division has issued permits for 5,590 events, with over 3,400 scheduled for spring and summer. Permit options include F (beer sales), F-2 (beer, wine, and spirits), and F-12 (beer and wine), each with specific eligibility requirements and timeframes. This June, the division will launch a new online permitting system to streamline applications and reduce paperwork for Ohio organizations.

🚔 Sheriff's captain resigns after hiding inmate-officer relationship. Wes Wagner, a 20-year veteran of the Licking County Sheriff's Office, stepped down following an internal investigation that found he failed to disclose a romantic relationship between corrections officer Jacquline Theimer and an inmate. Wagner reportedly reviewed dozens of inappropriate messages between the pair but didn't report them to superiors. Theimer, who resigned in November, had created a fake account to communicate with the inmate. According to investigators, Wagner compromised jail security by allowing Theimer to continue working after learning of the relationship.
