🎣 Trout takeover

Licking County • March 27, 2025

Good morning, Licking County. Spring has officially arrived at Groveport's Palm Pond, where approximately 600 rainbow trout just made their grand entrance courtesy of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources. This 20-year tradition transforms the peaceful one-acre oasis into a fishing hotspot, with the 10-13 inch swimmers creating a rare cold-water fishing opportunity that had anglers lining the banks moments after their release.

Meanwhile, Granville is making headlines with two significant developments. The historic 1833 Old Academy Building, once a sanctuary for a fugitive slave, will soon serve a new public purpose after an $80,000 village purchase. Just down the road, the village's $2 million downtown traffic project kicks off in May, promising smart signals and enhanced pedestrian safety by November. Construction will bring some temporary disruptions, but officials assure residents that beloved community events will continue uninterrupted throughout the improvements.

🐟 Rainbow trout make a splash at Groveport's Palm Pond. The Ohio Department of Natural Resources released about 600 rainbow trout into the pond in Heritage Park as part of their annual stocking program. This 20-year tradition provides a unique fishing opportunity in an area dominated by warm-water habitats, with eager anglers lining the banks immediately after the release. The stocked fish measure 10-13 inches and have a daily catch limit of five per person. Palm Pond itself is a peaceful one-acre oasis featuring walking paths, wildlife, and even a mini apple orchard planted to honor the town's agricultural heritage.

πŸ›οΈ Historic Granville landmark finds new public purpose for $80,000. The village of Granville is purchasing the Old Academy Building from the Granville Historical Society, which can no longer maintain the 1833 structure. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the building originally served as the Granville Female Academy until 1863 and has significant historical importance, including its role in aiding a fugitive slave in 1841. Village officials plan to use the space for public meetings in the short term while exploring long-term possibilities that will preserve the building's historic character.

🚦 Granville's downtown traffic project begins in May with lane closures. The $2 million signalization project will upgrade stoplights, extend sidewalks, and install smart signals at Broadway intersections with Main, Pearl, and Prospect streets. Construction will likely cause some street closures and detours similar to those during downtown events, with crews working primarily during daytime hours. Village officials promise the improvements will enhance pedestrian safety, reduce traffic congestion, and create a more environmentally friendly downtown, with completion expected by November. Annual downtown events will continue during construction, with work pausing only for Fourth of July celebrations.
