Jackson County • October 8, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. A decade of compassion marks a significant milestone for the Athens Area Stand Down, which has transformed from a modest distribution effort into a comprehensive support system serving up to 100 veterans annually. What began with just twelve agencies has expanded to over twenty organizations offering everything from healthcare to career assistance—creating a dignified space where veterans, often hesitant to seek help, can access life-changing resources.
While Pike County residents can now cast their early votes for November's election at the Government Center, Athens offers a different type of ballot—one for inner peace. The weekly meditation sessions at the KTC Buddhist Center provide a midday sanctuary where community members can drop in without registration or experience. Running through November 2025, these Thursday gatherings offer the perfect mindfulness counterbalance to the season's bustling election activities and veteran service initiatives.

🎖️ Athens event helps veterans in need for a decade strong. The Athens Area Stand Down marked its 10th year providing essential services to veterans and at-risk individuals in Athens County. What began as a small distribution of pre-packaged goods has grown into a comprehensive event serving 75-100 veterans annually, offering clothing, healthcare, career assistance and more. The first two hours are exclusively for veterans, creating a safe space for this "proud class of people" who typically hesitate to seek help. Over 20 agencies now participate, expanding from the dozen that volunteered during the inaugural event.
🗳️ Pike County voters can cast ballots early starting now. Early in-person voting for the November 4th General Election began October 7th at the Pike County Government Center. Residents can vote on weekdays from 8am to 5pm until October 24th, with extended hours available in late October and a Sunday option on November 2nd. The ballot features contested school board races in three districts and several township trustee contests, though village council seats remain largely uncontested. Voters unsure of their polling location can check the Pike County Board of Elections website or call directly for assistance.
