Good morning, Jackson County. One donation can save up to three lives, and last week's PORTS blood drive did the math in spectacular fashion—72 employee donations potentially saving 216 lives in a single day. The annual event, a tradition dating back to 1953, saw more than 30 first-time donors stepping up to the needle. This remarkable display of community spirit arrives just as another historic tradition prepares for its return—America's longest-running Emancipation Celebration marks its 162nd year with two days of cultural performances, historical reenactments, and fellowship at the University of Rio Grande.
In more sobering news, Piketon High School officials are addressing a serious security incident after discovering a student deliberately brought a pistol to school—just one day after the Minnesota school shooting. The juvenile faces felony charges and remains in detention while investigators determine if additional charges are warranted. Parents have expressed frustration about the delayed notification process, highlighting the delicate balance between safety protocols and transparent communication during critical incidents.
