Jackson County • July 7, 2025
Good morning, Jackson County. Transformation is in the air as Ripley unveils ambitious plans to revitalize Parsons Corner with a stage, waterfall feature, and patriotic etching by Christmas 2024. The $553,526 project runs alongside an even bolder vision from Thomas and Kylie Garrett for "The Wolf Den" – a massive 45,000-square-foot fitness center complete with basketball courts, golf simulator, and on-site daycare that promises to reshape local recreation options by late 2026.
The spirit of community was on full display at Point Pleasant's Liberty Fest, where riverfront celebrations drew crowds from as far as Iowa for the popular "Anything That Floats" race. Meanwhile, Wood County's 4-H camp continues its 85-year tradition of fostering lifelong memories along the Little Kanawha River, where four tribes competed for the coveted Spirit Stick while young campers developed friendships and social skills through hands-on learning experiences and evening gatherings around the council circle fire.

Meanwhile, Thomas and Kylie Garrett presented their vision for "The Wolf Den," a 45,000-square-foot fitness center featuring basketball courts, an indoor golf simulator, soccer area, and on-site daycare. The $553,526 Parsons Corner project is funded by Exxon and a state grant, while the fitness center, expected to be completed by late 2026, will be privately funded. The council also discussed opioid settlement funds and approved several personnel and administrative matters.
🇺🇸 Liberty Fest ignites patriotic spirit in Point Pleasant's riverfront celebration. The weekend event drew large crowds for live music, family activities, and community pride along the Ohio River. Matthew Adam Band kicked off Friday's festivities, while Saturday featured Josh Folmsbee & The Crooked Roots performances and a liberty-themed parade down Main Street. Families enjoyed attractions including the Rain Gutter Regatta, inflatables, and the popular "Anything That Floats" race, which attracted participants from as far as Iowa. The festival concluded with spectacular fireworks over the river, with organizer Dylan Handley already planning "bigger things" for next year's celebration.
🏕️ Wood County 4-H camp creates lifelong memories through hands-on learning. The summer program welcomed kids ages 9-21 to participate in educational activities, arts and crafts, and evening gatherings around the council circle fire. This year's younger camp featured four tribes—Delaware, Seneca, Cherokee, and Mingo—competing for the coveted Spirit Stick award while focusing on recycling education in partnership with the Wood County Solid Waste Authority. Teen leaders help younger campers "come out of their shells" throughout the week, fostering friendships and social skills in the 67-acre campground along the Little Kanawha River. The 85-year-old program continues to provide opportunities for youth to learn, grow, and connect with peers from diverse backgrounds.
