Good morning, Jackson County. Academic excellence is thriving in our community as 12 local students earned prestigious recognition at Ohio University this spring. Four hometown scholars achieved perfect 4.0 GPAs for the President's List, while eight more secured spots on the Dean's List with GPAs between 3.5 and 3.999βimpressive achievements that highlight the dedication and intellectual firepower within our county borders.
Beyond the classroom, creativity flourishes in Ravenswood where three art competitions awarded $1,800 in prizes while building community connections through artistic expression. On a more sobering note, the Scioto County grand jury recently handed down 20 indictments for serious offenses, including multiple drug trafficking charges and violent crimes. The proceedings underscore the ongoing challenges our region faces even as we celebrate the educational and artistic accomplishments that strengthen our community fabric.

π Ohio University honors local students for academic excellence. Approximately 2,200 undergraduates earned spots on the President's List with perfect 4.0 GPAs, including four students from Jackson County. Another 6,700 students made the Dean's List with GPAs between 3.5 and 3.999, with eight Jackson County residents receiving this recognition. The prestigious academic achievements require completing at least 12 credit hours of letter-graded coursework during spring semester 2025. Ohio University, a Carnegie R1-classified research institution, continues its commitment to recognizing student achievement across its various campuses.
βοΈ Scioto County grand jury delivers 20 indictments for serious crimes. The May 30 proceedings revealed charges ranging from drug trafficking and weapons offenses to violent crimes including rape and felonious assault. Multiple defendants face charges related to fentanyl and cocaine possession, with Loretta Clifford and Phillip Jackson each receiving 17 indictments for drug trafficking. Notable cases include Joshua Slusher's indictment for rape, Edward Marrero facing felonious assault and child endangerment charges, and two separate individuals charged with intimidating an attorney. Several defendants were also indicted for failure to appear in court as required.
π¨ Ravenswood art competitions spark local creativity and community engagement. Three contests held this spring attracted artists of all ages, from children to adults, with $1,800 in total prizes awarded. The competitions were made possible through partnerships with local businesses and private donors, with participants receiving gift cards, art supplies, and cash prizes. Gallery owners Brenda and Philip Moulton plan to host three more competitions this year in their space, which already showcases over 100 works from 11 local artists. Two textile artists will join the gallery's impressive collection in June.
