Good morning, Jackson County. After 170 years of operation—a span that witnessed the Civil War, two World Wars, and 37 U.S. presidents—the historic Chillicothe paper mill will print its final page on August 10. This industrial landmark that has stood as a community cornerstone since the mid-1800s now prepares for its final chapter, while local officials are working to connect displaced employees with new opportunities through resource centers and a job fair featuring over 30 companies ready to hire.
Meanwhile, creativity flourishes among our wisest residents as the Parkersburg Art Center prepares to unveil "Art Is Life/Life Is Art," showcasing the vibrant work of artists 55 and older. "Every single student created something they never thought they could," notes instructor Virginia Killian of the exhibition opening Friday. Elsewhere in our region, a driver in West Virginia escaped with only minor injuries after his pickup truck took a dramatic plunge over an embankment near Boaz—a fortunate outcome to what could have been a much more serious accident.

📄 Historic Chillicothe paper mill closing after 170+ years in operation. Pixelle Specialty Solutions announced August 10 as the final closure date for the facility, despite efforts from state officials to find a new buyer. The company cited declining orders and employee departures as factors making continued operations impossible. A resource center has opened to assist affected workers with job searches and training, while a job fair with over 30 companies is scheduled for June 25. The mill has been a fixture in Chillicothe since the mid-1800s.
🚚 Pickup truck plunges over embankment in West Virginia. A driver suffered minor injuries when his red pickup truck rolled off an embankment while turning onto Old River Road from Dixie Street in Boaz. The accident occurred around 10:53 a.m. on June 10, and the driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle. Camden Clark Ambulance Services transported him to the hospital for treatment. Multiple volunteer fire departments from Vienna, Waverly, and Williamstown responded to the scene along with Pifer's towing service.
🎨 Seniors prove creativity doesn't retire in vibrant new art exhibit. The Parkersburg Art Center will host an opening reception Friday for "Art Is Life/Life Is Art," showcasing work from artists aged 55 and up. Led by local artist Virginia Killian, the 12-session program allowed participants to explore different mediums while building confidence. "Every single student created something they never thought they could," Killian said of the exhibit, which runs through July 12. Visitors can meet the artists, hear their stories, and enjoy appetizers at the free public reception from 5-7 p.m.
Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.
