Good morning, Hocking County. Spanning 700 feet wide with towering 100-foot heights, Ash Cave has quietly witnessed over 300 million years of history, from ancient seas to Indigenous gatherings to 19th-century church services. Now, this geological wonder in Hocking Hills State Park has received official recognition with a new historical marker celebrating both its natural magnificence and rich human heritage – a fitting tribute to what remains Ohio's largest recessed cave.

While natural landmarks get their due, community matters continue forward. Lake Logan Association members will gather November 2nd at the Izaak Walton League lodge for crucial updates on ODNR communications and upcoming initiatives. Meanwhile, neighboring Athens County is tackling environmental challenges with a $7.5 million sewer project for New Marshfield, replacing aging septic systems that are failing at alarming rates. Construction begins in spring 2026, with officials working to secure financial assistance for residents facing connection costs.

🏞️ Ohio unveils historical marker at its largest recessed cave. The new marker at Ash Cave in Hocking Hills State Park celebrates both natural wonders and human history spanning centuries. Stretching 700 feet wide with 100-foot heights, the horseshoe-shaped cavern originated over 300 million years ago from ancient seas and sandstone. Indigenous peoples, including the Adena culture, once used the cave as shelter, leaving behind artifacts and a massive ash pile that gave the site its name. In the 19th century, the cave's natural amphitheater hosted community gatherings and church services thanks to its excellent acoustics.

While $5 million comes from grants, residents face connection costs of $3,000-$5,000 plus monthly bills of $55-$65, prompting officials to seek financial assistance for low-income households.
