Hocking County • June 20, 2025
Good morning, Hocking County. They say money makes the world go round, but in Appalachian Ohio, $125,000 is helping keep it green. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio's Environmental Stewardship initiative is now accepting applications until July 15, offering vital funding for community projects, research, and conservation efforts across 39 counties. Last year's distribution of $160,000 transformed ecosystems throughout the region—and with scholarships for natural resource education coming in 2026, the environmental momentum continues to build.
Hearts are beating stronger at Fairfield Medical Center thanks to a million-dollar renovation of its catheterization lab. Funded by the FMC Foundation, this high-tech facility allows physicians to perform more complex cardiovascular interventions through tiny catheters. The impact is anything but small—just ask Denise Bauer, who survived a "widow maker" heart attack thanks to the skilled team and advanced equipment that now has an even brighter future saving lives in our community.

🌿 $125,000 fund fuels environmental champions in Appalachian Ohio. The Foundation for Appalachian Ohio's Environmental Stewardship initiative is accepting applications for community projects, fellowships, research, and innovation grants until July 15. Made possible by a $5 million investment from the Muskingum Watershed Conservancy District and other partners, the funding supports conservation efforts across 32 Appalachian counties plus seven additional MWCD-served counties. Last year's program distributed over $160,000 to projects ranging from ecosystem restoration to cutting-edge environmental research. Scholarships for natural resource education will also be available in early 2026.
💉 Million-dollar makeover transforms Fairfield Medical Center's heart lab. The newly renovated catheterization lab, funded by a generous donation from the FMC Foundation, will enable doctors to perform more complex cardiovascular interventions. During procedures in this specialized space, physicians insert catheters into blood vessels to diagnose and treat conditions like coronary blockages and heart attacks. Former patient Denise Bauer, who survived a "widow maker" heart attack thanks to the cath lab, expressed her gratitude during the ribbon-cutting ceremony. The expansion represents a significant advancement for FMC's cardiovascular program, with doctors Jason André and John Lazarus championing the project from its inception.
