Hamilton County • September 9, 2025
Good morning, Hamilton County. The digital revolution's ethical boundaries are getting a thoughtful examination right here at home. UC's new Center for Explainable, Ethical, and Trustworthy AI represents a fascinating pivot in how we approach technology, focusing not on building more powerful systems but on understanding their societal impact. With nearly $665,000 in funding, this humanities-based initiative aims to tackle AI's darker side—from misinformation to environmental concerns—while actively engaging our community in shaping responsible tech policies.
Meanwhile, European traditions are finding new expressions across our region. Two Kentucky restaurants are bringing Oktoberfest flavors to Dayton with creative German-inspired dishes and passport-style dining experiences, while UC prepares for its poignant 9/11 memorial stair climb. The 2,071-step journey at Nippert Stadium symbolizes the World Trade Center evacuation—a powerful reminder that some moments in our collective history deserve to be remembered through both reflection and physical tribute.

🤖 UC launches AI ethics center to tackle tech's darker side. The University of Cincinnati is establishing a Center for Explainable, Ethical, and Trustworthy AI within its Philosophy Department this fall. Director Andre Curtis-Trudel emphasizes the center will focus on humanities-based study rather than technical development, addressing concerns like misinformation, cybercrime, and AI's environmental impact. The initiative will engage with the community through workshops, K-12 lesson plans, and a high school ethics camp planned for 2026. Funded by nearly $500,000 from the National Endowment for the Humanities and $165,000 from UC's College of Arts and Sciences, the center aims to gather public input on responsible AI use.
🍻 Two Kentucky restaurants bring Oktoberfest flavors to Dayton this month. Tuba Baking Co. and Wayfarer Tavern are collaborating across two September weekends (12-14 and 19-21) with special German-inspired dishes at both locations. Guests receive a passport to collect stamps for each Oktoberfest dish they try, including creative offerings like Smoked Curry Carrot Pizza and Country Ham Flammkuchen. Those who complete all four dishes earn a 10% discount on their final Oktoberfest meal. The culinary celebration showcases local businesses working together to bring European traditions to their Kentucky community.
🏢 UC honors 9/11 victims with 2,071-step memorial climb. The University of Cincinnati will mark the September 11th anniversary with its annual Stair Run at Nippert Stadium on September 11, 2025. Participants will climb 2,071 steps, representing the stairs in the World Trade Center twin towers. The free event begins at 6:46 a.m. and continues for 56 minutes—the time people had to evacuate the south tower before collapse. "Sept. 11, 2001, should never be forgotten," said Terence Harrison, an Iraq War veteran who helps organize the event that drew over 300 participants in 2024.
