Good morning, Hamilton County. In a sobering reminder about proper waste disposal, two separate garbage fires erupted in Cincinnati this week—one caused by a lithium-ion battery at Rumpke's recycling facility and another by discarded fireworks that set a garbage truck ablaze in Oxford. While firefighters quickly contained both incidents, they highlight the importance of following disposal guidelines for potentially hazardous items. Meanwhile, a fascinating piece of local history has resurfaced as we learn about J.P. Ball, Cincinnati's first Black photographer, whose pioneering work challenged slavery and gave Black subjects unprecedented control over their image in the 1840s.
Amid these historical discoveries and safety warnings, our community mourns the loss of 19-year-old William Loebker from Milford, whose life ended tragically when his motorcycle collided with a semi-truck on the I-75 southbound ramp to I-275 in Sharonville. As authorities continue investigating the accident, we're reminded of life's fragility even as we celebrate our rich cultural heritage.

🔥 Improper waste disposal ignites two garbage fires in Cincinnati. Rumpke officials reported that a lithium-ion battery sparked a fire at their recycling facility on Tuesday, while discarded fireworks caused a garbage truck to catch fire in Oxford on Wednesday. Though both incidents were minor, they required quick action from firefighters and Rumpke staff to prevent major disasters. Molly Yeager, Rumpke communications manager, emphasized the importance of following proper disposal guidelines for potentially dangerous items. The company specifically advised that fireworks should be soaked in water before being thrown away.
📸 Cincinnati's first Black photographer used his lens to fight slavery. J.P. Ball opened his pioneering photography studio in 1845, becoming one of the West's greatest photographers despite racial barriers. His Great Daguerrean Gallery showcased portraits of abolitionists, Underground Railroad escapees, and Cincinnati's elite. Though much about Ball remains mysterious—including a lost anti-slavery panorama—his work gave Black subjects unprecedented control over their own image during a pivotal era. Recently, a second portrait of Ball himself surfaced, selling for $125,000 at auction.
