Geauga County • August 13, 2025
Good morning, Geauga County. After standing watch for more than half a century, Mentor's 1965 fire station is finally headed for retirement. City officials recently sealed the deal on land at Route 84 and Plaza Boulevard, where a modern facility will rise to meet today's emergency needs. Meanwhile, the $2.15 million fire levy has sparked its own heated debate in council chambers, with members weighing a proposed one-year collection moratorium against potential funding concerns.
From public safety to public education, our region continues to embrace its rich heritage as CWRU's Siegal Lifelong Learning Program prepares to unveil a fascinating journey through Ohio's indigenous past. The five-session course will explore ancient cultures that once called our region home, offering a welcome historical perspective amid more sobering local news, including the ongoing trial of a former pediatrician facing serious allegations of misconduct with minor patients.

🚒 Mentor plans new fire station to replace 50-year-old firehouse. The city purchased land at Route 84 and Plaza Boulevard, closing the deal on July 9 after Council approval in February. Fire Chief Bob Zak is touring other Ohio facilities to develop plans for a modern building to replace the 1965 station. Meanwhile, Councilman Scott Marn proposed a one-year moratorium on collecting the city's $2.15 million fire levy, though other council members worry this could confuse taxpayers or jeopardize funding for fire services. Council will reconvene after their break on September 2.
⚖️ Doctor waives jury trial amid sexual misconduct allegations. Dr. Jan Kriwinsky, a 68-year-old former pediatrician from Moreland Hills, faces charges related to alleged sexual misconduct involving five minor patients. His attorneys filed motions to exclude statements from medical board hearings and one victim's testimony as the trial began on August 11. The allegations span incidents between 2019-2021 and in 2023, leading to Kriwinsky's medical license suspension in January 2024. Judge Mollie Ann Murphy will rule on the evidence motions when proceedings resume.
